First of all, they've since moved to the adjacent Orchard Parade Hotel (1st floor).

Now here's a place where you have to pay top dollar for your Japanese fix. E.g., the fatty tuna sashimi (seasonal price) was at 15 a piece when I popped by for lunch. This place is also known for its sushi, and we're also looking at 12 and upwards for a decently sized maki. The a la carte, which usually comes in servings of five, are again 12 and upwards. I've provided the pics so you have an idea.

For those big on ambience Akashi should pass comfortably, while those who're a stickler for service -- let's just you've got a mix of authentic (Jap) and Singapore-style service. But foodwise, which is really the key, you're unlikely to be disappointed. The sashimi, makis and a la carte dishes like the short rib and even the miso eggplant are some of my faves. There's even set lunches (most $20 and below) for those seeking value -- such as quality katsu dons with soup and fruits.

P.S. you'd notice from the pic the counter is pretty long -- do it the Jap way and talk to the chefs for specials.

This is definitely the branch to go to. The original one and certainly the best Akashi in town.

The service staff greet you ever so emphatically in fluent Japanese, and welcome you to a place tucked away in Tanglin shopping center. Really seems like a scene out of Japan, where this amazing restaurant is hidden away in a nice, cosy corner of Japan.

The food speaks for itself. The freshness of the bamboo clams is a must. What really amazed me was the eggplant. I really don't like eggplant, but somehow the sweet plus salty mix of the eggplant worked magic for me.

All in, a really nice authentic Japanese place to go to.....
