Peach Garden @ 33 (OCBC Centre)
Review date: 28 Nov 07
midorilime's review
Spent: $50 per pax

This place, I would say is slightly over rated. I mean ya the food is fresh but I would say not exactly top notch perfect. Service was very good though.

We had the peach garden special combination as appetizer, comes in individual portions. On the plate was silver bait fish (replaced the duck slice as we had ordered half a peking duck). This was crunchy and delicious. The one slice of prawn with fruit salad was ok nothing special. Jelly fish was crunchy and spicy. The beancurd skin seafood roll was crispy and had ample filling.

Next was the half peking duck. Skin was crispy however they did not slice it properly so there was meat stuck to the skin. I was very dissapointed with the wrapping for the duck skin though, it was much too thick.

We had a garoupa steam in hongkong style. Fish was very fresh and smooth. Absolutely delicious and the highlight of the night.

Scallops with asparagus was tasty. Scallops was big, juicy and crunchy. Only two pieces each though. Would have been happy with two pieces of asparagus and more pieces of scallops? ha ha.

Fried the peking duck meat with E-fu noodles. E-fu noodles was kind of dissapointing though. Slight tad too dry for my liking. I like my e-fu noodle properly braised. Takes a good chef to do that properly i suppose.

Pier Eleven @ Marina South

midorilime's review
Spent: $60 per pax

4 of us seated Al Fresco, did not request for cosy corner as you have to take of shoes and seat cross legged and some of us were wearing a dress. Well still had a beautiful view of the pier and it was also a cool night. Waiter was polite and helpful service was good.

The server free flow bread but bread was cold, hard. Guess you have to dip it into your hot soup if you order any?

Heard so much about the warm Ceasar Salad serve with poach egg and anchovie sauce but to our dissapointment it was not available. Recommended us another of their speciality Capprico Salmon or something like that. Salmon was very thinly slice with raw garlic and stuff on top. So so only. The soup of the day Cream of Lentil, tasted too "beany" for my liking. The Mushroom soup was okay, a blend of few types of mushroom and not overly creamy so you don't get that gelat feeling after drinking it.

Mains: Baby back ribs with bbq sauce was good but there was slight too much fat on it. The meat was soft. Tasted abit of the lamb, did not have the overpowering taste that most lamb chops have. The Duck Confit, slightly too salty but the skin was crispy and meat abit chewy. Have had better Duck confit elsewhere at a place called le bistrot. The Cod Fish was smooth but abit lacking in taste but it was suppose to be a healthy version?

Desserts: The phylio apple pastry thing was a dissapointment. I think they use too much spice or something in it. The tiramisu tower was good. The baked chocolate with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce did not ooze out immediately so I guess it was a little over baked but it was deep dark chocolate so it made up for it.

We had the chilean house red wine which was full bodied and easy to drink as well. Overall food was average but the Pier view and alfresco dining made up for it plus there was no crowd too.

Graze
Review date: 16 Nov 07
midorilime's review
Spent: $100 per pax

Had the natural oysters served with red wine and shallots, added some tobasco. Oysters were fresh and juicy. It just slides smoothly down your throat.

Black and white sesame crusted tuna sashimi. Tuna meat was firm. Slight wasabi on it brings a kick to the tuna. The dashi pannacotta (tofu like) and miri soy dressing goes very well with the tuna too.

Ceasar salad with the anchovies and bacon was a mistake though. Din really enjoy the taste of the anchovies. They threw in like few big strips of bacon (very tough, over fried). I reckon it would have been better if they had chopped up the bacon.

They recommended us the crispy hand rolled pork hock as their specials. Tried it with no regrets. However dressing could be a tinge less sweet. The outside of the pork was done so crispily nice. Yum!

Shared their recommended Graze "black and white" pudding plate. cut the black pudding and black dark chocolate sauce was flowing out, my absolute favourite, not too sweet as well. The white pudding was ok too, had this (egg tart) kind of taste. This portion could very well serve two.

A pity there was only two of us, IF not could have taken the dessert tasting plate which had a little of everything on the dessert menu. (Serves 4 people or so). Would definitely return to try the dessert tasting plate another day.

Oh and we had wine too, that explains the price tag. Reservations recommended to be seated Al Fresco.

Penang Kitchen

midorilime's review

The penang Fried Kway Teow was tasty with lots of ingredients. Generous with the lup cheong. Even though we ask for mildly spicy, Dish came and was pretty spicy but fine by me as I love spicy food.

The Seafood Mee Sua (Kor). Ingredients pretty fresh, firm fish, juicy prawns. They even added egg to the gravy. The gravy is somewhat like a horfun one but just that this was done in Mee Sua.

The fried Chicken Wings was ok but I reckon it was abit over fried, Would have been better if it was not so over cooked. The Ngor Hiang I reckon was so so only. I think the they put in too much spice powder.

Overall service was good. Food was served within 10 minutes.

Place is rather small so if its crowded, I guess you would have to wait outside for a table.

Yan Palace Restaurant (Hong Lim Complex)
Review date: 3 Nov 07
midorilime's review

This is one of those old establishment restaurant, I think as old as Red Star Restaurant. My first time here for Dim Sum. Very reasonable prices and food was not bad.

Spicy Chicken Claws was very tasty Well marinated and came out piping hot. The Siew Mai was juicy and had plump sizeable prawns and pork. Skin was thin too. The steamed pork ribs was tasty and smooth, however alittle on the fatty side.

The century egg porridge was tasty with ample century egg and shredded pork but the only dissappoinment was it did not came out piping hot for porridge. The pan fried carrot cake was average only, could not see the turnip strips or lup cheong.

The BBQ pork cheong Fun, Cheong Fun was smooth and chewy but could do with more BBQ pork fillings. The deep fried bean curd skin roll had very nice fillings and was fried to the crisp, dip it with some vinegar and yum! The Sharks Fin Dumpling soup, I could count the number of shreds of Shark Fin, Dumpling Skin was too thick for my liking but the filling was good, goes very well with the vinegar and shredded ginger. Deep Fried Prawn Ball with Almond Flakes and Mango was something new Which I have not tried. Very crispy flakes and juicy filling of prawns but mango was lacking in taste.

The claypot fish head with bitter gourd in black bean sauce. I would admit this dish was very well done, a pity is the type of fish ( The Song Fish) used which had a very strong mud taste did not suit my taste buds.

This place has a very wide range of dim sum dishes. Still a long list which I have not tried. The special lunch dishes are also priced very decently.  Probably the next time round.

Arrived here for Brunch. As they had a wedding going on, we had to be seated Al Fresco. Would have been very fine and nice amid lush greenery had the weather not been so humid?

The soup of Day, Cream of Cauliflower was very well done. Not too salty or creamy. Just right with little cauliflower in them, think they were soaked with vinegar for that sourish taste for that extra oomph and crunch.

The grilled prawn and squid salad with dressing was delicious. Prawn and squid was fresh and crunchy. The dressing was very good, with that sourish, sweetness bringing out the appetite. They were very generous with the prawn and squids too.

Mushroom Ravioli with sauteed portobello, pine nuts and creamy pesto suace. This dish was done to perfection. Not too cheesy or creamy or overpowering. Ravioli was done just nice. The pine nuts added that extra crunch to it. Quite generous with the portbello mushrooms too.

Chocolate Mud Cake served with vanilla cream. The cake had that tinge of bitterness of dark chocolate which I enjoy very much. Very rich though, better to share it.

I find portions very generous, so if you are small eater, I would advise to order to share. Service was good, they kept topping up our water. Other than the humidity, this place is perfect for a date. Would definitely return.

No Signboard Seafood Restaurant (VivoCity)

midorilime's review
Spent: $30 per pax

Had craving for chilli crabs so we decided to try this as everytime we walked pass this place at vivo city, every table seem to have an order of the chilli crab.

Had to wait about 20-30 minutes for the food even though they were not running a full house. But it was worth the wait

The Stir Fried Dou Miao, small portion was so petite, I guess if you like your vegies, do ask for a bigger size. However Vegies was fresh crunchy and tasty. Not too salty and oily too.

The chilli crabs, first taste of the gravy and we were  not dissapointed at all. Sweetness was just right with the right tinge of spicyness, unlike some other places which were either too sweet or not sweet and not spicy enough. Gravy was ample, more than enough if there are only 2 of you eating. We had 2 mantous each with the crabs. Mantou was of very small size, freshly fried. The one crab had lots of roe, and of ample size. The meat was fresh and firm. Every taste of the gravy you just want more of it, need i say more?

Will definitely return for the chilli crab.

Thank goodness we only shared a slice of Hawaiian which cost $6.90.

They warmed it up for us. A slice was cut into 4 pieces. Pretty substantial if you are small eater.

Crust was hard. Taste was lacking. Ham was dry and hard. Stingy with pineapples. Need I say more?

Anyway eateries at the zoo, price expensive, food BAD. Probably safer to just stick to KFC at the zoo.

Had a bottle of their dry riesling. A little bit dissapointing, but I would say they have an extensive range of German Rieslings on their wine list. Restaurant is pretty small so I would recommend reservations on a weekend?

Shared the pork knuckle with dear, I guess it was so so only? I mean the outside was crispy but the pork although soft n moist was lacking in taste. I think our chinese version of Pork knuckle tasted very much better. Anyway that was all we shared as we were not feeling very hungry and the portion was quite huge.

Service was not very good. Lack of staff and we had to wave a couple of times to get their attention for various things.I don't mind coming back for the rieslings as they were reasonably priced. As for food, Well might give the sausages or pizza a try the next round.

Le Bistrot

midorilime's review
Spent: $75 per pax

Waiters greeted us, friendly. Lighting made the place look cosy. 3 of us decided to share a bottle of Riesling. The wine was Nice and refreshing.

Bread came but it was cold, requested for it to be heated up and they promptly did so for us. Had it with olive oil and balsamic vinegar yum! We also ordered a basket of fries, which we very much regretted cos there was nothing special about it and it just made us started feeling full?

Ok i cannot remember the exact names for the food we ordered. Entree we tried a raw scallop with tomato sauce, very fresh and refreshing. Poor man's caviar was good as well, cheaper alternative. The squid entree you could choose hot/cold. Opted for the hot one, it was good decent size and very tasty. The salads they served on the side was very nice too, for the sauce they used.

Mains: The duck confit I had was superb. The SKin was crisp and the meat was juicy and tender, some places which serve this, their duck meat is dry and hard. Thumbs up for the Duck! My friend had the tuna, which was very good, firm and fresh. They cooked the outside and the inside was raw. Another one had the Salmon which they cooked outside and left it raw inside. Viola! Oh and they came in good sizeable portions. So remember to go slow on the bread and please skip the Fries!

We were planning to order 3 desserts but alas, all totally stuffed. Ended up ordering one Mousse Au Chocolat to share and believe me. No regrets whatsoever. Deep dark chocolate and crunchy and think there was peanut butter in it as well. Yum Yum!

Service was good overrall. but I guess cos of the number of tables they were serving for a weekday night. Will definitely return. Too bad none of us eats beef, should be good too?

Sushi Tei (Raffles City)
Review date: 1 Oct 07
midorilime's review
Spent: $26 per pax

Arrived and we were offered counter seats which we rejected and requested for table seats. They brought us to a tiny little corner, kind of Isolated.

Ordered some of their special new dishes. Clams in butter and soya sauce. Clams were of decent size but i did not really like the butter and soya sauce taste, more on the sweet side. I think I prefer my clams in sambal? Next was some baked crab thing which I found to be so so only.

The Tori Karage (deep fried chicken) which as usual was one of the better dish and my favourite too. The soft shell crab hand roll was not too bad, crispy crab and freshly made. The deep fried tempura squid was a tad too oily, think they din soak or drain the oil properly. Felt quite "gelat" after eating some of them.

The Chawamushi was smooth and tasty. The Octopus was a dissapointment to me. I had tasted better ones elsewhere. Tried the eel and egg (Umaki or some name like that). the egg was ample, eel was a generous portion too. Too stuffed for desserts after already.

If you are wondering why no sashimi, well I am not a sashimi fan. Overall not too bad if they did not put us at the back of the room, on a small tiny table. Quite hard to get waitress attention.

Lee Kui (Ah Hoi) Restaurant

midorilime's review

This is actually a very old Teochew Restaurant. Two of us ordered 3 dishes cos the lady told us the dishes came in various sizes which we assume Small, Medium, Large? When the dishes came had the shock of our life. Damn huge portions.

Crayfish in gravy. 4 big pieces on the plate. Flesh was firm, juicy, Gravy ample. Quite tasty. The green veg was pretty much a dissapointment, I think they served us Old Dou Miao. Had alot of roots and chewy bits.

The Kong Ba (Fat Meat) with Yam was average, you wrapped this with steam Buns. I reckon the hokkien restaurant served a meaner version. I don't know why we went to order this hokkien dish from a teochew restaurant?

Anyway today's dishes were kind of dissapointing for me. I been here previously and tried some other dishes which was much better than today. Stuff like the Cold crabs, Prawn Rolls and Yam paste desserts will probably be better choices.

Service was not exactly fantastic also. They put both of us outside (no aircon) on a small table which barely had any space after laying out 3 dishes. And there was 4 old men sitting behind us smoking away when it clearly stated on the table no smoking and the Waitress did nothing about it!

Made a reservation for two to have Dim Sum. Arrived and saw a long Queue but guess what, most people in the queue was for moon cakes. Disorganised, should have separated the Queue. Finally seated down. Waited for some time and had to wave for the someone to get our drinks and finally placed our orders.

Shared a bowl of shark's find dumpling and chicken soup. Soup was very tasty, well boiled for hours, Tiny piece of shark's fin, don't expect too much for $8. Dumpling was smooth with scallops and mushrooms and stuff.

The spare ribs was smooth and tasty. Regretted ordering the Chicken feet though, have tasted much better elsewhere. The BBQ pork Cheong Fun was pretty good too, filling was ample, sauce was ample too.

Scallop dumpling dissapointed me even though they mention was one of their speciality, Skin was not intact, not so smooth and quite thick. Had a jelly fish appetiser which I did not really enjoy as well. The jelly fish was bit rough and the taste was just not right.

The pork dumpling (Siew Mai) was not too bad. Came out hot and skin was thin, I think much better than Scallop dumpling.

I liked the deepfried Mango and prawnroll. Unique combination. Prawn stuffing was aplenty. You dip this in salad cream which I very much enjoyed. The Yam paste roll was good too, crispy and flaky on the outside and hot and creamy like on the inside.

We were looking at the moon cake menu and the nice waitress actually brought us samples. By the time were were finished, too stuffed to order their desserts. But we ordered 2 boxes :-)

Overall other than the earlier stuffed up at the door and ordering, their service in topping up tea and changing plates was pretty efficient.

International Buffet Dinner. I arrived happily expecting high quality food. However I was quite dissapointed with certain selections considering the price we had to pay.

The cooked food was okay, so so only. Stuff like Salmon, Duck, Chicken, prawns, fried rice, stir fry beef etc. The salmon sashimi was fresh and plentiful. Clam chowder soup was good and tasty. Winter Melon Soup was just as tasty. Note do not consumer too much soup though, makes you bloated?

Than came the disappointing stuff. Crabs din taste fresh, the meat was powdery, mushy like, I could not even finish my 1 piece of crab. The poach crayfish was another disappointment, Flesh was not firm, a bit to the soft side. The poach prawns some tasted okay, some tested mushy too. Fresh oysters was pretty okay though, but I did not dare consume too many for fear my stomach cannot take it.

They had a huge desserts selection though which I liked. Different type of mouse cakes, chocalate cakes, tiramisu, green tea cake, creme brulee, panna cota and many more. However there was only 1 type of cheese cake, which dissappointed me both in taste and in selection.

Staff were fast to clear empty plates. Service was prompt. A nice place for gathering or catching up with your galfriends.

Soup Restaurant (Paragon)

midorilime's review
Spent: $25 per pax

Had the set menu for two. 38+++ looks a good deal but when they add in all the nitty gritty ie nuts, towels, tea etc...

Put 2 of us on a small little table and all the food came out almost altogether leaving very little room on the table? Note if you like your food served slow, remind them during order taking.

Samsui Chicken was tasty and flavourful eaten with their special ginger dip wrapped it with lettuce and cucumber.Beware not to cosume too much ginger dip as very oily! Their soup of the day pork ribs and winter melon came out piping hot and was very tasty, must have been boiled for hours.

The fried slice fish tasted fresh but not exactly the best? The sambal potato leaves goes very well with rice but note, the amount of food, do not consume too much rice.

Lastly the dessert, very dissapointing. It was white fungus with red dates and gingko nuts. I wonder if it was just because dessert was free, they did not put any effort? The White fungus was hard, crunchy and undercooked. I just took one mouth and left it there. As for the dates and gingko, did not look that appealing to me either.

Overall waitress gave good service.

Menotti The Original Italian Cafe

midorilime's review
Spent: $20 per pax

We each had the set lunch menu which give us an option of any pasta on the menu, except the lobster pasta and followed by any dessert on the menu and also and coffee/tea on the menu.

I usually love cream base pastas ie carbonaras but I could never finish them due to the "gelat" feeling which you get when you eat cream base foods. Decided to try the crabmeat linguine pasta which came in a creamy tomato sauce as that would not be as overpowering. Pasta came in a good portion size. Pasta was springy and chewy good texture. The sauce was good too, a mix of the cream and sweet/sour taste of tomato sauce which whets your appetite. Aunt had the ravioli with cod in Saffron Sauce. This is to be ordered only if you are a big fan of creamy, extreme cheesy sauces. Aunt loved it while I found the suace to be overpowering for my taste buds.

Next I had the panna cotta with raspberry suace in a dark chocolate cup, As usual my weakness for desserts, panna cotta vanilla was smooth and delicious, The dark chocolate cup was Heavenly which I devoured whole! Aunt had the creme brulee, she found it a tee bit too sweet, but I found it to be perfect. Sweet tooth?

I also had a latte which came with the set, which I barely had space for after having 1.5 desserts? Definitely a must place to come for desserts, coffee and food. I also reckon the set menu was very reasonble priced.

This litttle restaurant had a nice view of the river and the colourful Alkaff bridge. Made a reservation for 5 of us, seated Al Fresco. We had a smoked salmon Salad and the Thai salad of the day to share. Both were not too bad, with the sweet, sour tinge of salads which brings out your appetite.

There were 2 soups of the day. 4 of us had the Mushroom soup which was very nice. Mushroom flavour was strong, not over creamy as compared to other places. 1 had the other soup of the day (something called cream of carrot, ginger?) had a taste of it and it was bland and not very appetising. Jo did not even finish her soup.

Next came the Main courses. 2 had the steak which they complained was a little well done, even though they asked for medium rare? 1 had the salmon which came in a substansial portion, the mash potatoes were good. I had the pork chop with the proversial herb sauce ( a garlick, buttery sauce) which I loved, accompanied with Sauteed Mushrooms,

We had mentioned that we were there to celebrate a friend's birthday. The lady presented the birthday girl with a little dessert platter of the apple crumble, the brownie and a scone. Tried a little of each, I lover the apple crumble and the brownie. It was fantastic. Don't mind just coming back for coffee, tea and desserts.

Overall good dining exprience as service was prompt and good. However waiting time for the food was a tee bit long considering that they were not running a full house? Oh and they used mismatched plates, some even resembled those from Chinese restaurantS? strange.

We made a reservation, requested for nice view and was seated by the glass window with a view of Clarke Quay. Arrived at 7pm, kind of early I suppose because Restaurant was still not full. Service was good and prompt.

Had the Set Menu which was 58++. The Sharkfin soup was tasty but a tee bit too starchy. Just starting on that first course already filled half my stomach due to the starch?

The fried lobster was seated on a salad, with a garlicky cream sauce. tasted very western but I liked the sauce. Reminded me of the garlicky sauce used for Escargots. The lobster was yummy.

Next came the fish, I think it was a hongkong steam style. First looked reminded me of Cod Fish, however biting in to it, I think it was either Garoupa or Sea Bass? But taste was good and fresh. Excellent

Next was a lamb dish which dear had, I had requested for mine to be changed as I do not take lamb, too strong a taste for me. I did try a little though. Did not like it but dear thought it was excellent. They gave me a deep fried spare ribs, which I liked very much. The accompaniments of broccoli and chilli on the ribs was ooh la la.

The noodles soup with deep fried fish  looked like Udon? Soup was tasty. Already very full up to this course, I just could not finish my noodles anymore. Just devoured the fish and the soup.

Loved my dessert, pomelo with Sago Mango. Very refreshing on the taste buds. Am a sucker for sweets, got a sweet tooth. but this dessert is fantastic

Brought my clients here for dinner. There were 6 of us.I am not a sashimi lover but if you are, I think this place is value for money. Ala Carte Buffet at 30+++. Fresh Sashimi: Salmon, Tuna, Octopus and some other raw fish which I have no idea what it was? The Cooked Salmon fish head was not too bad. Chawamushi was smooth. I loved the Yakitori chicken, very tasty. Tempura was crispy, goes well with the sauce. Than there is the fried Shisamo fish (pregnant fish), which was excellent too. Tori Karage fried Chicken was disappointing, came out cold, not hot as expected. they have quite a few other items on the menu which we did not have the stomach to try anymore. Did not even get to try their ice creams, air flown from some place, japan i suppose. Oh service was a bit slow, cos they were like running a full house, and i think understaffed. Definitely a place to return for Sashimi lovers. Reservations a must though!
