PS Cafe (Dempsey)

I would stay away from anything on the menu that has any vegetable in it. The last I went there, they included raw beansprouts and barely any salad dressing! How horrible! I gave a girlfriend of mine the advice of ordering only meat and/or cake. Their desserts are decent enough, though the steamed pudding with earl grey creme anglaise is a little suspect. It is a beautiful place though, hidden among greenery with floor to ceiling glass panels.

They have interesting snacks and quite a range of comfort food for the hungry, but not the attraction point of the place. With a wide range of board/card games, they charge by the head per hour and have various packages that include drinks or food. The last I went there, my friends who had the oreo cheesecake complained that it was too hard. So let it sit for a while before you venture consuming it.

I agree with the previous reviewer, that it is a great place to chill. They have really generous servings of dessert as well, so if you really need your daily sugar fix, head over for a giant martini glass of brownie cubes, vanilla ice cream and all the other mix-ins. Add that to your frozen margarita and nothing can beat it as a TGIF celebration.

I highly recommend their grilled vegetable sandwich that comes with really flavourful onion relish. It's not too bad value for money. Service was so-so, but to have a place to sit on a Friday night without any wait, was really a god-send.

Wala Wala Cafe & Bar

I love the E.I.C. band that plays every Friday and make sure that I arrive early (around 8) in order to secure a seat for the rest of the night. Forget to do that and risk having to queue up while the band plays the night away. They have decent pasta and drinks, but really just the standard fare. Most popular on their menu is actually their wings, which comes in quite a generous portion.

The Marmalade Pantry (Collyer Quay)
Review date: 24 Apr 07
amoebamoron's review
Spent: $25 per pax
I've visited Marmalade Pantry more times than I can count. There are the must-trys (Crab Linguine, Salmon and Soba, Chicken Wrap, Sticky-date toffee pudding) and the please-don't-try-even-if-your-life-depended-on-it (banoffi pie). Thank goodness the former outnumbers the latter, and the service at this outlet is amusingly friendly with free-flowing banter. I love the chic, simple and calming decor as well. Though it verges on the edge of resembling a very sanitary washroom, like its sister branch - Toast at Takashimaya.

Personally, the decor feels a little cheap, and the food really not fantastic. I had a kurobuta pork chop that did not amaze me in the least, and a rather forgettable dessert. There are definitely better restaurants in the area to try.

Lawry's
Review date: 24 Apr 07
amoebamoron's review
Spent: $100 per pax
One definitely cannot fault Lawrys for their showmanship nor their highly attentive service. Their beef is also roasted to perfection. But I couldn't help feeling a little exploited when forking out hefty prices for small servings of side dishes like creamed spinach, which was not much to scream about.

By visiting Lawry's you'd be paying mostly for the black leather, deep dark wood, red carpets and shiny silver beef trolley. Not to mention the 'french maids' and 'butlers' at your beck and call!

Fish & Co. (Jurong Point)
Review date: 24 Apr 07
amoebamoron's review

This review would be for most Fish&Cos out there actually. I used to really like their buttered rice with raisins, matched with coriander fish. But over the years, their standard seems to have dropped. The last I tried, the fish was not very fresh and their rice was slightly soggy. It's really sad as they have fallen trap to the banes of most franchises - a lack of quality control. Best to just stay away!

Annalakshmi Janatha Restaurant (Chinatown Point)

It is indeed value for money (especially since you get to decide how much your meal was worth), and worth a visit for your curry cravings.

But unless you know what you're putting in your mouth, don't be overly adventurous. They all look too good to resist, unfortunately. I made the mistake of trying a yogurt dip and found out that my body has an adverse reaction to yogurt-based dips. It was a mistake I never repeated afterwards.

Based on the prices, worth getting lost finding for it. =)

Shashlik Restaurant

This would be one of the places that does not require publicity and gains its fame purely through word of mouth. Like the other reviewers, there are two things I always order - Borscht Soup and Bomb Alaska. The soup speaks for itself, and the dessert was just the first dessert I ever saw catch fire and therefore something I order just for nostalgia's sake.

Other items on the menu are not very much to shout out about. My experience with a baked rice and fish was not pleasant at all, but I would go back again if only just to be a part of history - literally, since the waiters and waitresses are easily more than twice my age.

Corduroy & Finch

amoebamoron's review

I haven't had very much experience with the place, having visited only twice. On both occasions, I felt that the food was a little overrated, and frankly a little too pricey for me. I suspect that the atmosphere (and perhaps their breakfast so it seems) is their main pull factor.

The mediterranean platter was not too bad, but should either be eaten if you are merely feeling peckish, or to share with someone else. I had high hopes for the dessert platter (for four) but was disappointed when too many featured chocolate and even included huge chunky bars of chocolate, which if you ask me, seems more like the easy way out to provide variety at the lowest effort. Also, they require 'cakage' for bringing your own cake. At $3 (if I did not remember wrongly) per head, you're really better off buying a cake from them instead. Which I suppose is their whole purpose.

They are however, worth a visit if just for their freshly baked bread!
