Affordable Nyonya food
Spent: $12 per pax
This isn't the best Peranakan food selection in town but it certainly is one of the most affordable. At average 5 SGD per plate of viand, you can easily try a number of dishes without breaking your budget. Of course, the serving reflects the price, which is that it's not a lot.

Ayam Buah Keluak
Definitely so so only. The sauce is not thick enough and doesn't have that memorable flavor.

Honey Pork
One of my favorite things to order there. It's slightly burnt but that adds to the character of the dish. This is like char siew done on thin slices of pork.

Asam (red snapper)
Forgot the name of this dish but this is one of my favorites. I like sour stuff so the sauce was wonderful according to my taste buds. It had the right amount of sour and the fish was done well.

Itek Tim
Not a big fan of this soup. Tasted weird to me.

Definitely a place to go back to if you want affordable nyonya food. Maybe better to make reservations during weekend dinner as they tend to be quite packed.

So so

not your cheap pizza but somewhat tastes like one. Toppings were just ok but the amount of mozarella wasn't enough to give you that satisfying flavor. Not entirely sure this is a better alternative to pizza hut. However, it is healthier as it's less oily.

Not my placeof choice if I'm craving for pizza.

Disappointing dinner at Wild Rocket
Spent: $40 per pax
I don't understand the hype at all!

My husband and I ordered the cod fish cakes for starters, I had the ribeye steak and he had the seafood pasta. For dessert we had the Tiramisu.

The cod fish is honestly quite good. The Thai basil sauce complemented the dish very well. The portion I think is quite generous, if there are only 2 people sharing the appetizer.

Then came the main course. I had to order the Ribeye well done as I'm avoiding undercooked food due to my pregnancy. The Ribeye doesn't taste like a steak to me. It tasted more like a mock beef that I remember eating in one of the cafes in HK. Given the price of 32SGD, I think this was a complete rip off.

Then the pasta. My husband liked the pasta due to its asian flavor and commenting he could taste some balacha (?) in it. To me, it tasted the similar to the steak. It felt like the same sauce was used to toss into the pasta. ALthough it was a seafood pasta, there wasn't much seafood in it. The shrimps were diced into small pieces and there wasn't enough seafood chunks to give it the "bite".

Crossing my fingers, I hoped that the dessert would save the meal. True enough it did. The tiramisu was nicely done and the nuts was a subtle yet nice complement to the dessert. It was a good try to singaporeanize the dessert.

Service was so so with the waiter being a bit blur. Good thing the kitchen came back to confirm the order as they found it weird we're ordering 3 main courses. The extra one was the crab linguine we cancelled in lieu of the seafood pasta.

Not some place I'm raving about nor would recommend folks to try.

Riders Cafe
Review date: 19 Dec 08
broker's review
Spent: $20 per pax

My choice place for brunch.  Although it's a bit difficult to get to - as the only way to get there is via car - the ambience and the food makes up for it.

Brunch plates are reasonably priced from 9SGD for Yogurt with toppings to maybe 15 SGD for Rider's breakfast.  The servings are generous (at least based on my capacity to eat which I hear is less than normal).  The eggs benedict is simply divine! For an added twist, try the smoked salmon version.  The Rider's breakfast is just your basic eggs, toast, bacon or ham set with beans.  You can't do much to ruin this simple breakfast anyway.

The ambience is good as you are surrounded by greeneries mainly for horseback riding.  On the weekends, you can see horses walking around the area as well.  Better to make reservation as they can get quite packed during this time.

Service is just so so.  Nothing so great about it yet it's not completely terrible as well.

I quite enjoyed myself in this restaurant.  Every piece of the yakitori was very well done.  My personal faves were the beef with mushroom, scallops and some zucchini roll with cheese.

Reservation is a must as they are always packed.  Definitely some place we'll go back to.

Indeed the best dimsum I've ever had in Singapore!

Service is excellent of course as I expected no less from a hotel restaurant.  The ambience is nicely done making it actually a romantic chinese dining setting.

We opted for the dim sum ala carte and was nicely surprised that we can just order 2 pieces of each dimsum instead of the normal 3-4 servings.  This is good as my partner and I can try a lot more variations.

Each dim sum is nicely done and very flavorful.  The raddish cake was surprisingly different as it's softer and lighter compared to anything else I've ever tried in Singapore.

Definitely this is a place I'd recommend for Dim sum meals.

Olive Ristorante

Food is good but not confident it's worth the trip.

Firstly, getting there is tough as it's situated deep into Labrador park.  Even if you drive, you still have to walk up a slope to get to the restaurant.  The ambience is not romantic at all with the flimsy wooden chairs and the icky green table cloth.  They could have had a nice view of the sea if not for the tall trees covering the view.

We tried the seafood platter, portobello mushrooms and the seafood linguini (?).  All the dishes were nicely done.  The scallops in the seafood platter were nicely cooked and the smoked salmon complemented the appetizer really well.  The portobello mushroom salad is light and surprisingly good.  The pasta had generous servings of shrimps and mushrooms.

The food is good but I wouldn't travel all the way to Labrador park to have another taste of it.  Sadly, the restaurant is just forgettable.

By far the best Pizza I've had in Singapore.  We had the parma ham with arugula. The crust has great texture and is just with the right thickness.  The flavors blend well together and keeps you wanting for more.  Also, the Rib Eye was perfect, cooked medium well.  The beef remained very tender and savory.

With the romantic ambience, great food and the excellent service, this easily becomes my favorite italian restaurant in Singapore.

by far the best Vietnamese food I've had in Singapore.  The Pho was flavourful and the signature dishes really live up to the expectation.  I'll definitely recommend this place.

not worth the price.  Just go to starbucks if you're craving for some green tea ice blended drink and pick up your green tea flavored soya from NTUC.

The store needs to have more selection of green tea desserts, drinks to make it marketable - something like O'Sulloc in South Korea.

For a dessert bar, the selection is very limited.  I was expecting to be razzled by the multiple cake selections, creme brulee, soufle, etc but instead had to settle with around maybe 8 (?) dessert choices.

The presentation and the taste is just average.  I would think it's overpriced.

Had the pumpkin soup which tasted more like cream with some pumpkin soup.  The free bread was very tasty.  Mac & Cheese was quite different as they use a mix of gauda, emmental and others.  Definitely not made with your typical cheddar cheese.

The ambience was excellent - a perfect place for a romantic date.  However, the location is inconvenient as it's tucked deep inside the saddle club.  No way to get there other than by car.

The French Stall

broker's review

Nice quaint french restaurant in Little India.  I think it's extremely value for money.  The foie gras for 22SGD is a steal and the quality is not compromised either.  I had the cod fish which was nicely presented but I think needs a bit more flavor - it was quite bland.

Parking may be a nightmare as the resto is in the corner of the road with the side roads as the only parking option.  Better go there early as the place gets easily packed especially during weekends.

Best value for money Japanese food I've ever had in Singapore.  6SGD for Salmon Sashimi - it's normal price but the quality of the salmon is superb.  The serving is generous and definitely delicious.  The same goes for their other dishes!

The only downside is the service.  Don't expect too much - in fact don't expect anything at all.  The seating is limited so you're lucky if a large group left and you get yourself a nice seat.  Otherwise, wait patiently until someone leaves.

By far the best Peranakan food in Singapore.  The dishes are very flavourful and keep you wanting for more.  Make sure to try the Chendol and the Ayam Buah keluah.

Downside is the place is difficult to get to if you don't drive.  Mandatory to take a cab to get to the resto.

The best peking duck i've ever had in Singapore.  The duck was perfectly cooked with the right amount of crispiness.  The wrap was very soft and tangy compared to the others you'd normally get.

Service is fantastic.  The events manager was courteous, very professional and accommodated our needs. Highly recommend the place for fine dining chinese food.

Nice ambience, fantastic service but overpriced food.  The quality of the food is average compared to the other higher end french restaurants in Singapore.  Highly suggest to go there only for drinks as the price is just average compared to restaurants/bars in the area

Below standard customer service for events planning.  You need to chase them around, do constant follow up instead of them managing for you as a customer.

For a restaurant that's ranked as one of the best in Singapore, the experience absolutely disappointed me.  If you're planning to host your wedding or any other party here, reconsider.  You'll have to manage the headache of dealing with the event planners on top of your other worries.
